Howard Dean Endorses Bowen in California Special
Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on Monday endorsed California Secretary of State Debra Bowen in the 36th district special election.
“I’m proud to endorse Debra Bowen — an intelligent, humble and passionate public servant who has the courage to stand up to the special interests and has the record to back it up,” said Dean, a former Vermont governor. “We simply cannot afford to let the opportunity to send a progressive leader like Debra to Washington pass us by.”
Dean’s Democracy for America, which has about 7,000 members in the district, endorsed Bowen last week.
Bowen is running against several other candidates in the all-party special primary on May 17 to replace former Rep. Jane Harman (D), who announced her retirement in early February. Unless a candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a July 12 special general.
Other top Democrats include Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who has racked up many of the prominent endorsements in the race, including from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and several members of the Los Angeles-area delegation. Anti-war activist Marcy Winograd, who challenged Harman twice, also is running. Republican candidates include two elected officials from Redondo Beach, Mayor Mike Gin and City Attorney Mike Webb.
