Ex-Rep. Tanner Joins Prime Policy Group

Former Rep. John Tanner (D-Tenn.) is the latest ex-Member to land on K Street. Prime Policy Group announced Monday that Tanner, a pro-business member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition, will be the firm’s vice chairman.

The move reunites Tanner with his former chief of staff, Vickie Walling, who is a managing director at Prime Policy Group.

Tanner was widely viewed as one of the top prospects for K Street when he announced in December that he was retiring from Congress after 11 terms. Headhunters and hiring partners at firms speculated that he could command a salary north of $1 million, although Prime Policy Group did not disclose the terms of his deal.

Like other former House Members, Tanner will be under a one-year “cooling-off period” during which he won’t be able to lobby. But he will be allowed to provide strategic counsel to Prime Policy Group’s clients, which include the American Medical Association, AT&T and Walmart, according to recent lobbying reports filed with Congress.
