Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, has started a consulting business in the D.C. area and has hired two Hill staffers, who start next week.

Jenny Wing, who spent eight years on the staff of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), and Senate Armed Services Committee aide Dana White are joining the firm.

“It’s brand new,” said Wing, who will be a senior associate at the McChrystal Group and who focused on defense and appropriations issues in Harkin’s office.

David Silverman, the McChrystal Group’s CEO, said the firm is up to 10 staff members. But even with the new Capitol Hill hires, Silverman stressed, the business won’t lobby. Because the firm is not registered to lobby, none of its clients are publicly disclosed.

“We do provide advice and consulting on geopolitical issues,” he said. “That includes policy and legislation.”

The firm focuses on leadership consulting, offering “systems and processes” to clients, Silverman added. “We’re trying to add value,” he said.

The firm does not yet appear to have a website, but according to Silverman’s profile on the networking site LinkedIn, “McChrystal Group LLC is a network of uniquely qualified and experienced professionals that cross-levels thought, solutions and leadership expertise to create value for public and private industry clients.”

The profile also notes that Silverman, who said he worked for the general in the military, is a retired Navy SEAL.

McChrystal retired from the Army last year after Rolling Stone magazine published unflattering comments he and his staff made about the Obama administration.

In addition to the consulting business, which is based in Alexandria, Va., McChrystal also is teaching a course in leadership at Yale University.

“I was excited to do it, very much so,” McChrystal told the Yale Daily News in a Jan. 18 profile on his new role as professor. “I think I’ve grown a lot and I think I will keep growing.”
