Loughner’s Family: ‘We Don’t Understand Why This Happened’

Relatives of Jared Loughner expressed sorrow Tuesday for the victims of Saturday’s shooting but said they were unable to give any insight into why it happened.

“There are no words that can possibly express how we feel,” the family said in a statement, the Arizona Republic reported. “We wish that there were, so we can make you feel better. We don’t understand why this happened.

“It may not make any difference. But we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday. We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss,” the family said in the statement, which was read by two unidentified men in front of the Loughners’ home in Tucson, Ariz.

Loughner, 22, has been charged in the shooting, which killed six people and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The Arizona Democrat was holding an event in Tucson for constituents at the time of the attack, and authorities say she was its target. Giffords was shot in the head and is recuperating at a Tucson hospital.

“This is a very difficult time for us,” the family’s statement said. “We ask the media to respect our privacy.”
