House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer’s new Capitol office space came at the expense of the Appropriations Committee, a panel that has already ceded space in the Capitol.

The first-floor room on the far end of the Capitol’s House side used to hold Appropriations staffers, but now the Maryland Democrat and his staff have moved into H-148, emblazoned with a fresh wooden placard inscribed with Hoyer’s name.

Hoyer, on his way from the office to the House floor, said Wednesday that he tried in 2006 to secure the office for Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who at the time was the Minority Whip-designate heading into the 110th Congress.

“It’s a fantastic office,” Hoyer said, adding that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) “was very helpful” and “has conducted himself with great courtesy and understanding.”

Assistant Leader James Clyburn, meanwhile, has his office right around the hall on the first floor, directly beneath the Speaker’s lobby. It had been unclear whether his newly created title would also afford him Capitol office space, but the office in H-133 seals the deal for the South Carolina Democrat.
