Heard on the Hill: Is McMorris Rodgers the Newest Mama Grizzly?

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers gave birth to an 8 pound, 4.5 ounce baby girl early Wednesday morning, her office says.

Although no name has been announced (at least by press time), her office says the little lady arrived at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday. In a statement, the Washington state Republican says she and her husband, Brian Rodgers, are “overjoyed.”

“Both the baby and I are healthy and doing well at the hospital. We look forward to bringing her home soon,” she says.

Several Members of Congress offered congrats via Twitter. Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) tweets “Congrats & blessings to Cathy, Brian, Cole & Baby,” while Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) ponders “Does this make you a Mama Grizzly?”

McMorris Rodgers, 41, is the first woman to give birth twice while in office. Her son, Cole, was born in April 2007.

Impressively, the Congresswoman worked on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. A photo of her feet as she stood at a microphone at a press conference even appeared on Wednesday’s Heard on the Hill print page.
