HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Snowed Under, but Not Snowed In

Updated: 3:05 p.m.

The campaign trail can be a treacherous place — especially if you find yourself moving a 53-foot, 35-ton semitruck on a snowy mountain path. Just ask Rep. John Salazar, who pulled a semitruck out of a ditch in the midst of a major snowstorm Monday in Colorado.

The Colorado Democrat and his campaign team were driving up the snowy Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton when they came across a semitruck that had swerved off the road and blocked the highway.

Rather than turn around, Salazar, his wife and a few others pitched in to move the truck out of the way. Check out the video.

Back to the Future

Actress Olivia Wilde stars as a futuristic hottie in her latest project, a get-out-the-vote effort sponsored by left-wing group MoveOn.org. She plays a rebel fighter pitted against the evil RepubliCorp, a merger between the GOP and corporations.

In the clip, Wilde interrupts a message on CNNBC announcing that the Situation is engaged to Pamela Anderson (gosh, we can only dream!) to bring a broadcast from the future, telling viewers that because they didn’t vote in the upcoming midterm elections, everything went wrong.

Republicans have taken control of Congress and merged with corporations to become RepubliCorp, she says. After that, everything changed. For example, Social Security was replaced with a daily motivational e-mail from Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), a message cleverly titled “Your Morning Boehner.”

“Of course, this was all before we learned the two most terrifying words in the English language: President Palin,” Wilde says. “Look, here she is signing the declaration of war against China in 2017. Here she is signing the declaration of super war against Norway in 2020. And here she is signing a declaration of ultrawar against Iran, Botswana and whatever country Bjork is from.”

One unique thing about the video: It can be linked to Facebook, allowing viewers and their friends to be woven into its plot.

Overheard on the Hill

“Ice cream break during canvass with Rep. Engel and @kendrickmeek. Got a … chocolate crunch bar!”

— Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a Monday tweet. The Florida Democrat attached a photo of herself at an ice cream truck.
