HOH’s One-Minute Recess: A Colbert Sighting?

HOH hears that Stephen Colbert will be on Capitol Hill on Friday morning. A tipster says the comedian and Comedy Central host is slated to testify before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law. Colbert has teamed up with the United Farm Workers and will discuss immigrant agricultural workers.

The committee won’t confirm whether there is any “truthiness” to the story.

Meryl’s Naughty Joke

When legendary actress Meryl Streep took to the stage at Tuesday night’s dinner to benefit the yet-to-be-built National Women’s History Museum, she was a bit perplexed about why Congress hasn’t voted to allow the facility to be built.

Earlier in the night, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) explained that her legislation authorizing the federal government to give a parcel of land to the D.C. government so the museum could be built is held up in the Senate, where two Members have anonymous holds on it.

That confused Streep, who said she couldn’t understand why “we have to beg and kneel to our brothers in Congress to build a museum that will honor their mothers and grandmothers.”

And she seemed pretty upset that nobody could seem to persuade the chamber to “come to a vote” on the measure. “Come on ladies, we know how to do that,” Streep added.

Get it?!? Oh snap!

Streep’s double entendre sparked uproarious laughter from the mostly female audience. Many appeared a tad bit star-struck by the 16-time Oscar nominee.

Collins even took time to talk about Streep in her speech, noting that when a reporter asked her earlier in the night what her favorite Streep film was, she couldn’t think of just one. “Was it ‘Sophie’s Choice’ or ‘Mamma Mia’? And then there was ‘Julie and Julia,’ and I kept going on and on,” Collins joked.

Collins noted that Streep garnered a lot of attention during the filming of “Julie and Julia” for gaining several pounds while playing chef Julia Child (weight she subsequently lost).

“I’m still trying to figure out how Meryl added eight inches of height and managed to lose it so quickly,” Collins joked. “That’s real commitment.”
