HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Ants Marching, but One’s Missing

The Dave Matthews Band is scheduled to perform at Nationals Park on Friday night, meaning hoards of DMB fans will brave the scorching temps to hear the Charlottesville, Va., native jam … and one Member of Congress is using the festivities to raise campaign cash.

Rep. John Shimkus’s campaign is holding a fundraiser at the show, seeking a minimum donation of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for political action committees. But while the Illinois Republican will benefit from the concert, he won’t be singing along to “Crash Into Me.”

Shimkus spokesman Steve Tomaszewski told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Congressman will be home in his district, about 800 miles away from Nats Park.

Tomaszewski added that he doesn’t know whether Shimkus is even a DMB fan — “I would presume the fundraiser determines which shows are sellable,” he said — while the newspaper wagered that Shimkus isn’t a likely DMB follower.

“Shimkus’ taste tend more towards traditional — his wife is a former church choir director and Shimkus learned to play the violin along with his children,” reporter Jake Wagman writes.
