HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Kagan’s No Carrie

It’s all Kagan, all the time in Washington on Monday. And since HOH will leave the finer points of the politics and substance of the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to our colleagues, we’re focusing on the SCOTUS nominee’s sartorial statements (and yes, we’d do the same if the nominee were a man).

Kagan apparently has little in common with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda (the gals of “Sex and the City,” duh): She doesn’t favor teetering stilettos.

According to a story last year on the legal gossip site AboveTheLaw.com, Kagan said she wouldn’t wear Jimmy Choos for oral arguments because “the heels are too high to stand in while she argues.” We give her bonus points just for knowing her luxury labels.

But even though she won’t wear four-inch heels in court, Kagan’s fashion choices are occasionally daring. In a profile of potential Supreme Court picks last year, Vogue magazine reports that Kagan once donned a costume for a University of Chicago Law School musical. “She joined the students and appeared onstage wearing a motorcycle jacket and sunglasses and was absolutely hysterical,” a former classmate tells the fashion mag.
