Downer Expected to Enter Louisiana Open-Seat Race Soon
Former Louisiana Speaker Hunt Downer (R) said Tuesday that he’s “99 percent” certain he’ll run for Congress in the 3rd district seat that is being relinquished by Rep. Charlie Melancon (D) as he runs for Senate.
Downer said an announcement will come “in the very near future” and that he’s currently working on wrapping up his service in the Louisiana National Guard where he is retiring as a major general this month.
Downer said he’s also working on re-opening his old law office in Houma, La., but that he’s “looking forward to continuing my service to my state and my country.”
Downer’s comments come a day after GOP state Rep. Nickie Monica said he was getting out of the GOP primary to make room for Downer.
Monica joined the race in late December after expressing interest in running for Congress even before Melancon announced he was running for Senate.
The Louisiana primaries are Aug. 28 and the runoff date is October 2.
Attorney Ravi Sangisetty (D) is the only Democrat running for the seat.
