Giannoulias to Dine at Vice President’s House

It may not be the president’s basketball court, but Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (D) is scheduled to be at Vice President Joseph Biden’s home this evening. The Democratic Senate candidate will attend a dinner Wednesday night at Observatory Circle with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, a leader in the global Orthodox Christian community and a well-known environmentalist, according to a Giannoulias campaign aide.Giannoulias is personally close with President Barack Obama from their time spent together in Illinois politics, and the two famously played basketball together. Giannoulias has evoked Obama in his campaign for the president’s former Senate seat, although the White House has made it clear that they will not make an endorsement in the Democratic primary.Giannoulias is running in the Feb. 2 primary with former Inspector General David Hoffman and former Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Robinson Jackson. Giannoulias visited with White House senior adviser David Axelrod on Oct. 14, and Hoffman had a similar meeting with Axelrod on Oct. 29. A Jackson spokeswoman said the campaign was attempting to schedule a visit with the White House on the candidate’s next trip to Washington, D.C.
