Boehner Retracts Criticism of Ethics Committee

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) back-tracked late Thursday from his comments earlier in the day suggesting that the House ethics committee sometimes gives bad advice to Members.Boehner had previously dismissed criticism of Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) for failing to report on his financial disclosure forms income from the sale of Exxon stock, telling Roll Call that Carter had made the same mistake as other Members and that the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct is partly to blame because it sometimes gives lawmakers bad advice.But Boehner spokesman Michael Steel later issued a retraction to his boss’s statement.“Mr. Boehner got some bad information,— Steel said in an e-mail. “He had no intention of disparaging the important work the Ethics Committee is doing.—
