Illinois: Rep. Davis Takes Sides in Upcoming Primary

Rep. Danny Davis (D) has signaled he is supporting former Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Robinson Jackson’s (D) bid for Senate.

Davis cut a $2,000 check to Jackson’s campaign on Sept. 29, and a formal endorsement is expected this weekend, according to a Jackson aide. This is Jackson’s second Congressional endorsement: Rep. Bobby Rush (D) said in late August that he was backing Jackson.

Jackson is in a competitive primary for President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat. State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, who has received a handful of Member endorsements, former Democratic Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman and attorney Jacob Meister are also running.

Giannoulias is widely considered to be the frontrunner in the Feb. 2 Democratic primary, although polls show him trailing likely GOP nominee Rep. Mark Kirk (R) in the general election.
