Updated: Aug. 12, 1:13 p.m.Rep. David Scott’s (D-Ga.) district office in Smyrna was defaced by a four-foot swastika on Tuesday, an action that follows a series of hateful letters being delivered to the lawmaker’s office.“We woke up this morning and my staff called me and said that there was a swastika, Nazi signs painted on the sign, which of course is very unfortunate and I just feel very bad about it and feel — I really feel bad about the person who did it,— Scott said on Fox News. The FBI, Capitol Police and the Smyrna Police Department have all been informed of the incident.”The Atlanta office FBI has received information from U.S. Congressman David Scott’s office concerning vandalism at his Smyrna, Georgia office. Based on the nature of the reported incident, the FBI is investigating this matter together with the Smyrna Police Department as well as the U.S. Capitol Police,” Special Agent Stephen Emmett said.Bill Nigut, the southeast regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, said Scott, who is black, called him after learning of the incident and “is convinced— that the onslaught of hate messages is a result of his deliberations over health care reform.“Trying to link one of the most heinous symbols of hatred against the Jewish people to a legislative proposal is despicable beyond words,— Nigut said. The swastika and hate mail represent “a “frightening display of bigotry and ignorance that should not be tolerated by a democratic society.—Nigut cited one of the faxes sent to Scott that was filled with racial epithets, including a passage that said, “folks are not going to stand for socialized medicine even though most Negros refuse to stand on their own two feet.—
