Illinois Republican Rep. Mark Steven Kirk raised more than $580,000 in this year’s second quarter and has more than $1 million in his campaign account — funds he could use for a U.S. Senate campaign.

Kirk’s campaign released its baseline fundraising figures Monday, nine days before a July 15 deadline to submit reports to the Federal Election Commission that itemize receipts and expenditures from April 1 through June 30.

As a member of the influential Appropriations Committee and a representative of the mostly well-heeled suburbs north of Chicago that comprise Illinois’ 10th District, Kirk is among the House’s top fundraisers. In the 2007-08 election cycle, Kirk raised and spent nearly $5.5 million en route to winning a fifth House term with 53 percent of the vote.
