Small Plates: Drinking Up For a Good Cause

Bars all over town will be pouring their best drinks this week in honor of World Cocktail Week. Beginning today and running through May 13, bars and restaurants around the world, including establishments in New York, Washington, D.C., and Sydney, will pour drinks in an effort to raise money for the Museum of the American Cocktail located in New Orleans. In addition to fundraising, World Cocktail Week is meant to educate drinkers on the art of the cocktail and give them a chance to meet some of the more talented bartenders in town.

Various bars throughout the D.C. area will be hosting events with the help of the D.C. Craft Bartenders Guild. Patrons will get the chance to sip drinks and chat with mixologists like the PX Lounge’s Todd Thrasher and the Gibson’s Derek Brown.

The first such event will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bar Pilar (1833 14th St. NW), where mixologist Adam Bernbach will be mixing Gin Rickeys. On Thursday, Gina Chersevani will be hosting an ’80s happy hour at PS 7’s (777 I St. NW), where patrons can rock out to music played by DJ Brian Miller while sipping on drinks.

The highlight event of the week is a cocktail party and five-course dinner served at Proof (775 G St. NW) on Monday night that will benefit the museum. For $145, customers can enjoy a cocktail hour featuring hors d’oeuvres and five specialty cocktails created for the event followed by five more cocktails paired with each course.

National Gallery Makes Spain Focus

Those who visit the National Gallery of Art this summer will be treated to Spanish paintings and Spanish food prepared by chef José Andrés. In honor of two exhibits, “Luis Meléndez: Master of the Spanish Still Life,— which runs from May 17 through Aug. 23, and “The Art of Power: Royal Armor and Portraits From Imperial Spain,— running from June 28 to Nov. 1, the gallery has transformed the West Building Garden Cafe into Garden Cafe España through Sept. 27.

Andrés, the mastermind behind Minibar, Oyamel and THINKfoodGROUP, has created a menu that offers dishes like gazpacho, tortilla de patatas and piquillo peppers. Wine pairings will be available to accompany each dish, and recipe cards for some of the dishes will be available for customers to take home.
