In June 1962, Rep. John McCormack (D-Mass.) had been recently elected Speaker of the House. A Boston trial lawyer who never finished high school, McCormack here has breakfast in the Capitol with unidentified friends and Members. McCormack, who served as Speaker until his resignation in 1970, was seen as a courtly and conciliatory figure.
