McCarthy to Serve as Chief Deputy Whip

Incoming House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) on Monday will tap Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as his Chief Deputy Whip, Republican sources have confirmed. McCarthy has been a close confidant of Cantor’s for the past two years. The lawmakers worked closely together on the Young Guns fundraising and infrastructure program for Republican House challengers. Cantor, McCarthy and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) launched the Young Guns program to supplement the National Republican Congressional Committee’s efforts to raise money and provide strategic support for GOP House challengers. McCarthy is no stranger to political leadership roles, having served as state Assembly Minority Leader while in the California Legislature. McCarthy is a prolific fundraiser, having donated $150,000 to the NRCC as a candidate during the 2006 cycle, before he had been elected to his first term.
