Wise Named Top Ethics Office Aide

The Office of Congressional Ethics has tapped a former Justice Department attorney as its top staffer.

Leo Wise will serve as staff director and chief counsel.

Wise previously served as counsel to the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general of the criminal division. He also served as a trial attorney in the DOJ’s fraud division.

The OCE, established earlier this year, is tasked with reviewing complaints and recommending investigations to the full House ethics committee.

The six-member OCE is led by former Reps. David Skaggs (D-Colo.) and Porter Goss (R-Fla.).

“The Board of OCE is delighted that Leo Wise will bring his exceptional experience and good judgment in the conduct of high-profile and sensitive investigations to the work of the Office,” Skaggs and Goss said in a statement. “With the hiring of a Staff Director and Chief Counsel, the Board will now be in a position to adopt rules of procedure for its investigations and begin operation in the 111th Congress.”
