Kucinich to Introduce Sole Impeachment Resolution

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) today will read the full text of a resolution that calls for the impeachment of President Bush.

Unlike the last time Kucinich requested a full reading of an impeachment resolution, when it took the reading clerk four hours and 45 minutes to read through 35 impeachment articles, the reading of this resolution should take far less time since it only contains one article.

Kucinich is not releasing the text of the resolution until 2 p.m. today, which is about two hours before he is expected to bring his privileged resolution to the floor.

The article of impeachment is titled, “Deceiving Congress with Fabricated Threats of Iraq WMDs to Fraudulently Obtain Support for an Authorization of the Use of Military Force Against Iraq,” referring to weapons of mass destruction.

Kucinich said he will object if Democratic leaders seek to refer the resolution to committee, a move that would effectively kill it. Instead, he said he will push for a floor debate on the resolution.

But Democratic leaders seem intent on averting what could be a dicey floor debate. They would instead prefer to kick the bill to the House Judiciary Committee, where the previous impeachment resolution has languished.

“My expectation is that we will refer that to committee with the other resolution of impeachment that was also introduced by him,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said on Wednesday.
