Senators Attend Russert Funeral

Business in the Senate was at a halt on Wednesday morning, as several lawmakers attended the funeral service for Tim Russert.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), as well as Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) attended the private funeral service at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also attended the service, along with presidential candidates and Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

An invitation-only memorial service was to be held at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Russert, NBC’s Washington bureau chief and moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday from a heart attack. After hearing the news, many Members rushed to express their condolences.

The Senate could possibly vote to proceed toward a housing bill Wednesday afternoon.
