Virginia: Davis News Imminent; Connolly Raises $160,000

With Rep. Tom Davis (R) expected any day to reveal whether he will retire at the end of his term, the campaign of Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly (D) announced Monday that it had brought in $160,000 in the three weeks since launching an exploratory committee.

Exploratory committee spokesman James Walkinshaw touted the committee’s fundraising success Monday and said Connolly is expected to make a formal announcement regarding his campaign sometime in the next two weeks.

Davis has said he would make his re- election plans known by the end of January, and rumors continue to swirl on Capitol Hill about whether he will opt out of an eighth term for a lucrative job on K Street.

Davis widely had been expected to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Warner (R) but decided against the move in October. If Davis decides to leave Congress, Democratic chances in the battleground district would be much improved. But the Democratic primary also is shaping up to be a tough fight with former Rep. Leslie Byrne already in the race.
