Reports: Craig to Resign Saturday

Embattled Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) is expected to announce his resignation Saturday, according to several media reports.

Craig’s political fortunes plummeted after Roll Call reported Monday that he had been arrested in a Minnesota airport men’s room in June and pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge on Aug. 8. A plainclothes police officer accused the Senator of making sexual advances toward him in the men’s room.

Craig’s looming departure means Gov. Butch Otter (R) will choose someone to take over Craig’s Senate seat. The leading candidate is seen as Lt. Gov. Jim Risch (R), but Rep. Mike Simpson (R) and state Sen. Brad Little (R) are also mentioned.
