Capps: First a Nurse

Long before she was a public servant in Congress, Rep. Lois Capps was helping people through nursing. The California Democrat is shown in her class photo from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., from which she graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Capps later earned a master’s from Yale University and worked as a nursing instructor and nurse administrator in Connecticut and California. She won her House seat in a special election in 1998 caused by the death of her husband, Rep. Walter Capps.
