Bars Hold Happy Hour Fundraisers for Market

Washington, D.C., residents can head down to the local bar tonight and drink while helping the displaced vendors of Eastern Market, which was gutted in a fire last week.

More than 20 bars throughout D.C. will be giving 5 percent or more of their profits tonight to the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, which is raising money for the market’s displaced vendors. The fundraiser is the brainchild of the Facebook group Rebuild Eastern Market, which gathered more than 1,000 members in the days after the fire.

Many of the participating bars are on Capitol Hill, including the Hawk ’n’ Dove, Union Pub, Fin macCool’s and Tunnicliff’s. Each bar has established different hours for the fundraiser; a list of the bars and other information is available at www.easternmarketrescue.com.

Shaw resident Melissa Byrne said she mentioned the idea of a happy hour on the Web site, and the idea just ballooned. And she said the group would continue to organize citywide efforts to save the beloved market.

“It doesn’t matter where you are,” she said. “It’s cultural.”
