Among the oldest artifacts at the Capitol Visitor Center today is the marble gavel that the nation's first president used in a Masonic ceremony to lay the building's cornerstone. But it's not a relic — the gavel is still used by the local Georgetown Masonic lodge, a symbol of living history as old as the Capitol itself.
