District Profile from Politics in America

Stamped with the state seal, the 8th -- Michigan's capital district -- used to be dominated by various manufacturing facilities for the influential auto industry. The district, once home to Olds Motor Vehicle Co., includes Lansing, East Lansing and various agricultural communities to the east, but it is emerging from its agrarian and industrial tradition toward a suburban future.

Auto industry cutbacks have hurt the 8th: General Motors' Oldsmobile line was eliminated in 2004, and GM plants and auto parts suppliers have shut down or been forced to cut shifts and lay off workers. GM is now only the third-largest employer in the Lansing area, behind the state government and Michigan State University. Parts of Lansing are beginning to show signs of rebirth after several years of economic contraction, especially around Cooley Law School Stadium, the home of the minor league Lansing Lugnuts, and in the north side's quirky Old Town neighborhood. Health care is an important field in the capital region, and the biotech sector is growing, too.

Just down the road from the capital, East Lansing caters to one of the most liberal constituencies in the state, the Michigan State community. The university, founded in 1855 as the nation's pioneer land grant college, is home to several top-ranked programs, including education and study abroad. The university is building an isotope accelerator that is expected to pump about $1 billion into the local economy and make the region a global hub for nuclear research.

Local support for Republican Rick Snyder in the 2010 gubernatorial race belied Ingham County's traditional Democratic lean -- Snyder won there by a slim 220 votes. The 8th's powerful agricultural vote rests in Livingston and Shiawassee counties, which also are new commuter sanctuaries for residents who work in Lansing, Detroit and Flint. The remainder of the 8th's voters live in northern Oakland County.
