District Information

District Profile from Politics in America

The 5th spans Chicago's North Side, stretching from Lake Michigan in the east to near O'Hare International Airport (located in the 6th) in the west. The district is home to one of the city's few remaining active industrial sectors, running through the middle of the 5th along the Chicago River's north branch. It continues west of the city to pick up parts of Northlake and Schiller Park.

DePaul University students and "lakefront liberals" inhabit wealthy east-side communities such as Lincoln Park. Areas such as Roscoe Village and Lakeview, which includes the gay community Boystown, have seen an influx of younger residents. Overdevelopment, especially in the Wrigleyville area, is a concern for residents hoping to keep neighborhoods' identities intact. Ethnic restaurants and entertainment spots in eastern parts of the district provide weekend and evening destinations for residents from other parts of the north side, the west side and suburbs.

The district's west covers part of the Bungalow Belt, a stretch of 1930s brick homes separating the suburbs from downtown Chicago. The west's working-class base routinely supports populist-style Democrats, but far west-side areas and portions of the Bungalow Belt can support Republicans in local elections. Middle- and working-class neighborhoods and second- and third-generation German and Polish residents still dominate this part of town.

Although the district's population overall has decreased since 2000, the Hispanic population boomed -- the 5th, two-thirds white a decade ago, now is 29 percent Hispanic, a lower percentage than only the majority-Hispanic 4th and southwest-side 3rd districts.

The combination of minority, ethnic and liberal-leaning groups makes for a largely Democratic constituency here. The 5th supports Democrats in federal races, and Democratic statewide candidates also do well here. Barack Obama won 73 percent of the district's vote in the 2008 presidential election.
