State Sen. Jeff Denham (R) won the June 8 primary and is expected to have no trouble in the general against physician Loraine Goodwin (D). While Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won the district with just 52 percent in 2008, four years earlier the Fresno-based district gave George W. Bush 61 percent -- a mark Radanovich never dropped below in seven re-elections.

District Information

District Profile from Politics in America

A fertile farm district, the 19th includes the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. It takes in about half of Stanislaus County, grabbing a portion of Modesto. East of Stanislaus, it moves south from Tuolumne to Mariposa County into almost all of Madera County and part of the city of Fresno, home to large Hispanic, Hmong and Armenian populations.

The district's portion of Stanislaus County includes just more than one-third of Modesto's population and the city of Turlock. Some tracts of farmland north of Modesto may give way to highway routes as local officials address smart growth issues and business development.

Along with Madera County to the south, sparsely populated Tuolumne and Mariposa counties host Yosemite National Park. These counties feature ski slopes and forests of the Sierra Nevada range in the east and former Gold Rush towns in the west.

This agricultural district -- boasting the nation's third-highest orchard acreage and about 10 percent of California's milk cows -- has a Foster Farms Dairy milk and juice processing plant in Fresno. A ConAgra plant in Oakdale is the city's largest employer. Madera County has several notable wineries and their tasting tours attract tourists.

The 19th is reliably Republican at both the statewide and federal levels, and GOP candidate Meg Whitman won 55 percent of the district's 2010 gubernatorial vote.
