A rumor in North Carolina that independent voters are ineligible for early voting. Fliers in Florida that falsely tell voters who have already mailed in their ballots that they have “not yet returned” them.
Hoaxes and misinformation about the midterm elections are surfacing as many states go to the polls for early voting.
The confusion is sure to be compounded by last-minute changes in the location of polling places, sparser polling places available for early voting and purged voter rolls.
These actions are effectively voter suppression, the American Civil Liberties Union said. The group mounted legal challenges in states like Georgia and Arizona, but these court battles won’t be resolved before Election Day.
Ensure your vote is counted by verifying your voter registration status with your state’s board of elections. Consult the National Conference of State Legislatures to determine whether you’ll need an ID to vote.
And if a Republican mayor posts on Facebook that the voting day for Democrats is Nov. 7, assume that he’s joking.
