Republican Governors Association Raises $24 Million

The Republican Governors Association,  a Section 527 political organization,  reported  it raised $24.1 million and spent $15.6 million during the second quarter of 2014.  

Major donors included David Koch , executive VP, Koch Industries (NY) $2.5 million; Sheldon Adelson , CEO, Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NV) $2.5 million; and Ken Griffin , CEO, Citadel Group (IL) $1.5 million.  

Republican Governors Association Raises $22 Million, Lists Donors (updated)

Under the chairmanship of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the Republican Governors Association reported more than $22 million in donations during the first quarter of the year.  

The Republican Governors Association , a Section 527 political organization, reported  to the I.R.S. receipts of $22,432,846 and disbursements of $15,643,221 during the first quarter of 2014.  

Million-Dollar Contributions Fuel Super PACs

Super PACs continue to be fueled during the first quarter of the election year by extremely large contributions, including million-dollar contributions.  

Early filings of the 2014 first quarter campaign finance disclosure reports show two Super PACs have already reported million-dollar contributions.  

Hess Corporation Builds New Pipeline for Political Contributions

An American oil company, whose former executives moved secret money to President Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign, has set up a political action committee to give contributions to federal candidates and committees.  

The Hess Corporation Political Action Committee (Hess PAC)  registered  with the Federal Election Commission, listing Eric Fishman in New York as the treasurer. The PAC will collect donations from employees, give contributions to candidates, and disclose the activity.  

Adelson Starts Moving 2014 Political Contributions

An American casino and resort operating company run by a major national Republican donor has contributed $200,000 to a Republican Section 527 Committee that supports state and local candidates.  

In a new report covering January financial activity, the Republican State Leadership Committee, a Section 527 organization, reported Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands Corporation  contributed $200,000. Adelson is chairman and CEO of the gaming company. In 2013, the company gave $450,000 to the RSLC. In 2013, Adelson gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association.  

National Section 527 Organizations Raise Over $133 Million

New financial reports from national political organizations, organized under Section 527 of the I.R.S. code, have brought the total of money raised last year to over $133 million, an increase of over $50 million from new reports filed in the last few days.  

The 488 national Section 527 organizations which impact indirectly on federal elections raised $133,007,637 in 2013.  

New Reports Show Big Checks Flow for Politics

If you thought money in politics was limited, take a look at the big checks from donors being reported by Super PACs, joint fundraising committees, and Section 527 groups.  

Year-End campaign finance reports of candidates and political committees are due today, and disclose financial activity for the last part of 2013. While there are limits on how much can be given directly to federal candidates and a political committees, the limits are higher when several committees set up a joint fundraising committee. For Super PACs, that do not give directly to candidates but make independent expenditures, there are no limits. For Section 527 groups, there are no limits.
