Maine Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin and Democratic challenger Jared Golden were neck and neck in the latter’s first survey of the general election in the 2nd District, with Golden’s position strengthening under a simulation of the state’s new ranked-choice voting system.

Poliquin led Golden 40 percent to 39 percent in the initial matchup, according to a polling memo obtained first by Roll Call.

More than a week after voters went to the polls, the Maine secretary of state on Wednesday night declared state House Assistant Majority Leader Jared Golden the winner of the Democratic nomination in the 2nd District.

Golden will now challenge two-term Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in November in a traditionally Democratic district that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016.

Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with House GOP leadership, on Monday stepped up its initial ad reservations for the fall. 

CLF’s new $15 million in TV reservations comes after the GOP super PAC had already reserved $38 million in 20 districts in April. The second round of spending includes broadcast and cable TV reservations in three new districts and increased reservations in seven specific districts and one media market.

The Democratic field for Maine’s 2nd District got more crowded Monday with the entrance of a potential self-funder.

Lucas St. Clair announced his candidacy Monday morning with supporters at the Appalachian Trail Cafe in Millinocket and formally kicked off the campaign at the Bangor Public Library later in the day.

EMILY’s List named two-time Democratic congressional candidate Emily Cain as its executive director Wednesday.

Cain ran against Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maine’s 2nd District in 2014 and 2016, with the endorsement of the group, which backs female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights. She replaces Jess O’Connell, who is now the CEO of the Democratic National Committee.

The liberal health care advocacy group Save My Care is launching a TV and digital advertising campaign worth more than half a million dollars on Monday that will run this week.

GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin will defeat Emily Cain in Maine’s 2nd District, The Associated Press projects.

Poliquin led Cain 55.2% percent to 44.8 percent with 77 percent of precincts reporting.
