McCaskill Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., announced Monday that she has breast cancer and will be in St. Louis for treatment.  

Via her tumblr page , the senator wrote a post, “I very recently learned that I have breast cancer.”

After Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., served jury duty this year, she said she would try to repeal the law that lets lawmakers skip out on their civic responsibility. On Thursday, she teamed up with Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., to introduce a one-sentence bill to end exemption for members of Congress summoned by the courts.  

In January, McCaskill left jury duty, which she said was on her bucket list , to return to Washington for a Senate vote.

Former pharmaceuticals executive Martin Shkreli is poking back at House Oversight and Government Reform Committee ranking member Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., regarding a committee subpoena to testify on Jan. 26. “Mr. Shkreli was subpoenaed to appear before Congress, and it is his responsibility to take reasonable steps to comply. If he plans on trying to use his own intentional inaction as some kind of bogus excuse for not showing up at Tuesday’s hearing, people will see right through such a juvenile tactic.  I hope he reconsiders his current course and avoids any additional legal action against him,” Cummings said in a statement.  

Shrekli asked Cummings on Wednesday for his opinion on appearing before the committee after tweeting about receiving the subpoena. Following Cummings’ response, Shrekli tweeted that what he said was “disgusting” and “insulting.”

Lawmakers are predictably split on the National Guard's announcement it will be slashing motor sports sponsorships — just days after a car sporting the Guard's livery won a major NASCAR race.  

Sen. Claire McCaskill was among those who lauded the news.  

Begich Slams McCaskill in Feud Over Alaska Native Corporations

It isn't the first time an Alaska senator has chastised a colleague for a lack of understanding about his non-contiguous state.  

Sen. Mark Begich lit into fellow Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri after she sent a letter to the Small Business Administration administrator seeking details about the use of a small and disadvantaged business contracting program by Alaska Native Corporations.  

Senators Push Security Clearance Overhaul After Navy Yard Shooting Report

There appears to be bipartisan support for doing something to mitigate the risks of another Navy Yard shooting.  

Senators are renewing their calls to overhaul federal security clearance checks after an independent review of the events leading up to the 2013 mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.
