The Arizona Senate primary officially kicked off Friday, and it’s going to be a battle — with war planes and all.

Republican Rep. Martha McSally launched her Senate run at the Tucson Jet Center on Friday morning and will travel to other areas of the state later in the day. She donned a blue flight suit to fly in a World War II-era AT-6 trainer to Phoenix, and then to Prescott. McSally, of course, is piloting the plane herself.

Arizona GOP Rep. Martha McSally officially announced her Senate campaign Friday, kicking off what is likely to be a divisive Republican primary.

“Like our president, I’m tired of PC politicians and their BS excuses,” McSally said in a video announcement emphasizing her service in the Air Force. “I’m a fighter pilot and I talk like one. That’s why I told Washington Republicans to grow a pair of ovaries and get the job done.”

Sen. Rand Paul is backing state Sen. Kelli Ward in the GOP primary in the newly open Arizona Senate race. The Kentucky Republican is the first sitting senator to back Ward’s campaign.

Ward was originally challenging GOP Sen. Jeff Flake, who has been sharply critical of President Donald Trump. But with Flake recently announcing his retirement, the field is now open for other GOP hopefuls to run for Senate. Ward has also received support from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who has said he wants to take on every GOP Senate incumbent except Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

Rep. Dave Schweikert is not considering running for Senate in the newly open race, a source close to the Arizona Republican confirmed Wednesday.

Schweikert had hinted he was leaning against it, telling reporters earlier on Wednesday, “I’m not sure I have the burning passion that that type of race would take.”

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema is “seriously considering” challenging GOP Sen. Jeff Flake in the Arizona Senate race, she said after a local news outlet reported that she is planning to run.

Flake is considered one of the two more vulnerable GOP incumbents in 2018, and Sinema is also facing pressure to make a decision, with the prospect of a Democratic primary for the race.

A Democratic super PAC is targeting two GOP senators up for re-election in 2018, urging them to back an independent investigation into President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

American Bridge 21st Century is launching a two-week digital ad campaign Thursday against Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake and Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, with plans to expand the campaign to other platforms. The ads are targeted to “engaged voters” of all parties and direct voters to a petition calling on the senators to support an independent investigation.

Republican Sen. John McCain will defeat Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in Arizona’s Senate Race, The Associated Press projects.

The race was McCain’s most competitive run for Senate to date (his sixth), or at least it appeared that way early in the year when it was still unclear how controversial Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would affect down-ballot races in states like Arizona.
