NRCC Touts 11 More 'Young Gun' Candidates

The National Republican Congressional Committee promoted 11 more candidates to 'Young Gun' status Tuesday morning, elevating their campaigns to the highest level of the program that provides organizational and fundraising support in top House contests.  

The 11 additions brings the NRCC's total number of Young Gun candidates this cycle to 32.

After a relatively unsurprising  series of primaries this month , June brings another collection of intraparty contests. More than half  of the states will have selected their nominees by the end of the month. Montana's top three statewide officials endorsed former Capitol Hill staffer John Lewis' bid for the at-large district.

“John has traveled to every corner of our state as a problem-solver and a listener, and he knows it better than anyone I know. He will serve the people of Montana well," said Democratic Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester and Gov. Steve Bullock in a joint statement released on Wednesday. Lewis is a former Baucus aide, and he's also earned high marks from House Democrats. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee named Lewis to its Jumpstart program in September.

Obama Campaign Manager Fundraises for House Candidate

President Barack Obama's 2012 campaign manager will help his former colleague, John Lewis, a Democrat who faces a tough challenge in the at-large House seat race in Montana.

Jim Messina sent a fundraising email to boost Lewis, who worked with him in the office of Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont.

Montana state Sen. Jon Sonju was on Capitol Hill last week meeting with GOP-aligned groups ahead of a potential House bid in 2014.

Sonju, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor last year, spent much of Thursday at the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is preparing for a potential Senate bid by freshman GOP Rep. Steve Daines.

Former Baucus Staffer Readies House Campaign

John Lewis, a former staffer to retiring Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., is moving closer to a run for Congress.

Lewis filed a statement of organization with the Federal Election Commission on Aug. 22.
