Hawaii: Mazie Hirono, Tulsi Gabbard Win Primaries

Rep. Mazie Hirono easily won her Democratic Senate primary Saturday, and Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard scored an upset victory in the Democratic primary to replace Hirono in the House.

In heavily Democratic Hawaii, both Hirono and Gabbard are favored to win in November as well, especially with homegrown President Barack Obama on the ticket.

Congressional seats aren't vacated often in heavily Democratic Hawaii.

So a scrum ensued within the party when two opened up last year, and is set to culminate Saturday when the Democratic nominees for the open Senate seat and 2nd district House seat are decided. In a year when homegrown President Barack Obama leads the ticket, the winners of the Democratic primaries will be especially favored to win in November.

Hawaii: Harry Reid Endorses Mufi Hannemann in 2nd District

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) endorsed former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann for Hawaii's open 2nd district.

In a statement, Reid said that the two "go back many years" and that he worked with Hannemann and Democratic Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka on securing funding for Hawaii.

Hawaii: EMILY’s List on the Air in 2nd District Primary

Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard is getting more air support from outside groups in her Democratic primary bid for the open 2nd district.

EMILY’s List, which helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, launched a “significant six-figure buy” on Monday for an ad running through Aug. 6, a spokeswoman said. The Honolulu Civil Beat first reported the news.

VoteVets Action Fund Runs Ads in Montana, Hawaii

VoteVets Action Fund is spending $200,000 to air an attack ad against the Republican Senate nominee in Montana and to continue an ad buy on behalf of a Democratic House candidate in Hawaii.

VoteVets, a progressive veterans organization, announced a $100,000 ad buy for a television spot slamming Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg, who is challenging Sen. Jon Tester (D) in one of the most competitive Senate races in the country. The dark ad in Montana takes a critical look at Rehberg's voting record on veterans issues.

Hawaii: Dueling Polls in Open 2nd District Democratic Primary

Hours after an independent poll showed a tied race in the open 2nd district Democratic primary, former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann released an internal poll that found him continuing to hold a double-digit lead over Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard.

Hannemann led in his survey with 42 percent, followed by Gabbard with 26 percent and former state Rep. Bob Marx with 8 percent. None of the other candidates received more than 2 percent, and 17 percent of those polled remained undecided.

Hawaii: VoteVets.org Adds $50K to TV Buy for Tulsi Gabbard

VoteVets.org, the largest progressive organization of veterans in the country, spent $50,000 on Wednesday to keep on air its TV ad supporting Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard. The spot will now run for two more weeks.

Gabbard, who was endorsed Wednesday by EMILY's List, is one of several Democrats vying for the nomination in Hawaii's 2nd district, currently held by Rep. Mazie Hirono (D), who is running for Senate.

EMILY's List announced today it is fully endorsing two female candidates locked in competitive Democratic primaries in Wisconsin and Hawaii.

The group, which helps elect women that support abortion rights, is backing state Rep. Kelda Roys in Wisconsin's open 2nd district and Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard in Hawaii's open 2nd district. Roys is the former executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and Gabbard is a veteran and former state representative.

Hawaii: VoteVets on Air for Tulsi Gabbard

A liberal veterans group is going on the air in Hawaii to support Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard in the open 2nd district.

VoteVets.org, the largest progressive organization of veterans in the country, spent $75,000 to air the ad for 10 days on broadcast television and plans to spend more as the Aug. 11 primary approaches. The ad features several Iraq War veterans describing Gabbard's biography, which includes military service and public office.

Hawaii: Sierra Club Backs Tulsi Gabbard in 2nd District

The Sierra Club endorsed Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard in Hawaii's open 2nd district Democratic primary.

“Tulsi’s strong environmental record, including helping pass tough laws regulating greenhouse gases and being an outspoken advocate for renewable energy, distinguished her from the other candidates for this office,” said Steve Montgomery, who co-chairs the group’s Hawaii chapter.
