Florida Republican Puts House Campaign on Hold Because 'Health Issue'

Former Republican Rep. Sandy Adams announced Wednesday she is suspending her campaign for Congress in Florida's 6th District "due to health-related developments."  

"I recently discovered a significant health issue that demands my focus and attention," she said in in a statement. "Over the next several weeks, I will be focusing on my health and will reassess my campaign to determine if I can give it a 100% commitment. I owe that to my family, and to the residents of the 6th District." Adams, who lost her re-election bid in 2012 after one term, is one of three Republicans – including Adam Barringer and G.G. Galloway – who have filed to run for the Republican nomination to replace Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, who is vacating the seat to run for Sen. Marco Rubio's open Senate seat.  

Ron DeSantis Announces Florida Senate Bid

Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday he is running for Florida's open Senate seat, becoming the first well-known Republican to enter what's expected to be among the most competitive races of the cycle.  

The second-term member is a favorite of tea party-aligned conservative groups, a number of which encouraged DeSantis to run after GOP Sen. Marco Rubio said he would vacate the seat to run for president .

Sunshine State voters chose their nominees for the House today. And although former Rep. Alan Grayson didn't have a primary opponent in the 9th district, the Democratic nominee for the Orlando-area seat came away a winner.

The outspoken former Congressmen and his Democratic allies have worked hard and spent good money to ensure he faces an opponent other than Osceola County Commissioner John "Q" Quinones, who would have been the strongest GOP candidate in the Democratic-leaning district. Their work paid off.

Florida: Ron DeSantis Goes on TV

Congressional candidate Ron DeSantis, who has recently received a series of impressive endorsements in his bid for the GOP nomination in Florida's open 6th district, went on TV recently with a simple direct-to-camera ad.

"Politicians play by their own set of rules, we pay the tab," he says, standing in what appears to be a living room. "They spend us into oblivion, yet they give themselves generous pay and benefits. Worst of all, they disregard their oath to the Constitution. This has to stop," he says, as light patriotic music begins to play.

Florida: Ron DeSantis Gets Club for Growth Endorsement

If endorsements equal momentum, Florida Congressional candidate Ron DeSantis has it.

Running for the GOP nomination in the open coastal 6th district, he picked up the nod from the PAC of the powerful anti-tax Club for Growth today. On Monday, tea-party-affiliated Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) gave DeSantis his endorsement. Last week, former Rep. Adam Putnam (R-Fla.), now the Sunshine State's commissioner of agriculture, gave DeSantis his endorsement. And last month, FreedomWorks gave DeSantis its nod.

Florida: Adam Putnam Endorses Ron DeSantis

Congressional candidate Ron DeSantis, in a competitive open-seat race for the GOP nomination in the 6th district, today picked up the endorsement of former Rep. Adam Putnam, the Sunshine State's  commissioner of agriculture.

"Ron DeSantis is a true conservative we can trust to reform Washington, D.C. I'm happy to endorse Ron because I know that he understands we need to get our economy going again by reducing the reach of government and lowering the burden it places on our job creators and innovators," Putnam said.

Florida: Ron DeSantis Gets FreedomWorks PAC Nod

UPDATED 5:27 p.m. | Congressional candidate Ron DeSantis today picked up the endorsement of FreedomWorks PAC in his race for the GOP nomination in Florida's open and strongly Republican 6th district.

"Ron DeSantis is the perfect example of a constitutionally-limited government candidate," FreedomWorks PAC Executive Director Max Pappas said in a statement.

Florida: State Rep. Costello Joins 6th District Race

State Rep. Fred Costello (R-Fla.), a former mayor of the city of Ormond Beach, announced a long-expected campaign for Congress on Monday in the open and strongly Republican 6th district.

He’s considered a serious contender by local political operatives. But he’ll face a tough primary battle with former Naval JAG officer Ron DeSantis, former Ruth’s Chris CEO Craig Miller and Jacksonville City Councilman Richard Clark, among others.

Crowing campaigns are beginning to leak their first-quarter fundraising numbers. Generally, any campaign releasing its fundraising numbers this early is happy with its totals. Reports must be postmarked by midnight Sunday.

Florida: Democrat Announces for 6th District Seat

Nonprofit CEO and Navy veteran Heather Beaven (D) announced Wednesday a long-shot House bid in Florida’s redrawn and strongly Republican 6th district.

Most of the newly configured district is currently represented by Rep. John Mica, but he decided to run in the newly numbered 7th against fellow Republican Rep. Sandy Adams.
