Republicans Circulate List of Top Female House Candidates

The end of primary season is nigh, and Republicans are now optimistic their slate of House candidates will yield a net gain of female members in the conference after November.   

Republicans are now focusing their efforts on a specific slate of top female candidates with a strong chance of coming to Congress.

Updated 10:33 a.m., 2:15 p.m. | The race for California's coveted 31st District remained too close to call Wednesday morning, with just 390 votes separating the second- and third-place finishers.  

The results will make or break the race for Democrats, who have invested significant resources in this competitive district and named it one of their top targets of the cycle.

GOP Primary Field Grows to Replace Campbell | #CA45

Businessman Pat Maciariello announced Thursday that he is running to replace retiring GOP Rep. John Campbell in California's 45th District, joining an already crowded GOP primary field in this strong Republican district.

Maciariello, a self-described political newcomer, joins state Sen. Mimi Walters, Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach and retired Marine Greg Raths in the GOP primary.

Every year, scores of congressional candidates visit the CQ Roll Call offices to meet with reporters and Contributing Editor Stuart Rothenberg. This feature, “The Candidate,” will ask these congressional hopefuls five questions about their campaigns. Responses and questions have been edited and condensed.

The candidate: Republican state Sen. Mimi Walters. The member: Retiring Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif. The race: Located in Orange County, Calif., the 45th District is a safe Republican seat. Walters is running against two announced Republican candidates: Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach and Col. Greg Raths. The candidate’s team: David Gilliard, Gilliard Blanning & Associates (lead consultant); Anne Dunsmore, Capital Campaigns (fundraising).

John Campbell to Retire From House #CA45

Five-term Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of his term, citing a desire to start a new chapter in his life after 14 years in elected office.

"At the end of this term, I will have spent 14 years serving in full-time, elected politics. I am not nor did I ever intend to be a career politician," Campbell said in a statement. "I am ready to begin a new chapter in my life."

Anti-Incumbent Super PAC Adds Jones, Moran to Target List

Updated 7:39 p.m. | The Campaign for Primary Accountability plans to launch spending crusades against Reps. Walter Jones Jr. (R-N.C.) and Jim Moran (D-Va.) as part of the super PAC’s growing list of targeted races.

The deep-pocketed super PAC also announced a “Watch List” of more than two dozen veteran Members whom it plans to evaluate and potentially target during the height of primary season during the next three months.
