Whole Foods Coming to H Street

Foodies rejoice! You’ll soon be able to buy high-end olive oil and organic greens a few blocks from the Capitol.

Whole Foods is coming to Sixth and H streets Northeast, Mayor Vincent Gray announced Wednesday. “Happens to be two blocks from where I grew up,” he added, noting that the area has changed dramatically since those days.

A lease has been signed for the property that currently houses Murry’s Food, a small grocer that specializes in frozen foods.

“I think having a popular, high-end organic grocery store in that corridor will really be a significant contribution to the growth there,” Gray said, also trumpeting the long-promised H Street streetcar project currently under construction.

Whole Foods plans a 39,000-square-foot store on the bottom of an apartment complex that will stretch between Sixth and Seventh streets.

Whole Foods Market also plans to construct a 36,000-square-foot store near Navy Yard and Nationals Park at 800 New Jersey Ave. SE. That location is targeted for an early 2017 opening.

The retailer has been in the city for several years and currently employs 575 District residents. Two new locations should add 400 jobs, according to Scott Allshouse, Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic regional president, and will bring the total number of stores in the city to six.

“People ask for us to come to their neighborhoods and we respond to that,” Allshouse said, when asked if Capitol Hill was a highly-desired location. “We’re happy to be there, absolutely.”
