Two More Democrats Consider Taking on Mike Coffman

Two more Democrats are looking at challenging Rep. Mike Coffman (R) in Colorado’s redrawn 6th district, according to a Denver Post report.

Colorado Senate President Brandon Shaffer and Senate Majority Leader John Morse are considering joining state Rep. Joe Miklosi and physician Perry Haney in the 6th district Democratic primary.

Shaffer had previously announced he was running in the 4th district against Rep. Cory Gardner (R). But redistricting made a Democratic pickup in the 4th much more difficult. Conversely, the new map for the 6th has endangered the once-safe Republican grip on the seat.

“Several Democrats have approached Brandon to run in CD6, and the campaign is taking the time to consider that option, but at this time, he is running in CD4,” Shaffer consultant Craig Hughes told Roll Call in a written statement.

The Post also reported that Shaffer has been polling the 6th district.

Miklosi was able to avoid another Democratic contender in former state Speaker Andrew Romanoff. In December, Romanoff publicly opted out of a run and endorsed Miklosi.

“My campaign was never based on the lines on a map. It’s about creating jobs and getting our economy moving again,” Miklosi said in a statement. “We are receiving great support and I’m confident that we will defeat Mike Coffman in November.”
