Entering into weekend discussions, congressional leaders are making a last-ditch effort to avoid across-the-board tax increases scheduled to take effect Jan 1.
After a White House meeting Friday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said they would try to negotiate a bipartisan agreement by Sunday.
Both chambers are scheduled to be in session Sunday.
The Senate will vote on two nominations, and then it will recess to hold caucus meetings to discuss a potential fiscal cliff proposal.
The House votes on 13 measures under suspension of the rules, including three veterans bills. Twelve of the bills, if passed, would be cleared for the president’s signature.
In addition, House Rules chairman David Dreier said his committee might meet as early as Sunday to lay the groundwork for quick consideration of a fiscal cliff deal. A Sunday Rules meeting would set the voting terms for a deal that could be on the House floor as early as Monday.
