Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call Tillis faces a number of opponents in Tuesday’s GOP primary.
The new rules state that anyone seeking a top leadership position must have been a registered Republican for at least four years and be vetted by a special committee before they run.
The rule switch comes after supporters of former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, took over the party in 2012.
