All iPhone-toting Hill staffers take heed: The sticky-fingered want what you’ve got.
Paige Anderson, legislative director for Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.), learned that awful lesson last night while trying to unwind with co-workers at La Lomita (1330 Pennsylvania Ave. SE).
Bono Mack aide Jill Shatzen tells HOH that the Congresswoman and staff popped over to the restaurant in between votes to bid farewell to a departing colleague. The group took a seat on the patio and, in true D.C. style, everyone kept their smartphones out for easy access.
According to Shatzen, Anderson kept an eye on the ongoing floor votes and one hand on the government-issued communication device throughout the meal. All hell broke loose about 7:30 p.m.That’s when a group of teenagers converged, wrestled the Apple product from Anderson’s grasp and bolted down the street.
“It was crazy,” Shatzen said.
Cops were called. A few suspects were detained. Bono Mack even filled in Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers on all of the excitement when the Washington Republican strolled by about 20 minutes later.
Although the pilfered phone remains missing, Shatzen said House administrators claim to have remotely wiped it clean. If only they could purge the bad taste from the dinner guests’ mouths.
“It could have been any of us," Shatzen said. "We all had our phones out.”
