As William "Bunk" Moreland on "The Wire," Wendell Pierce was used to getting into a few scrapes with Baltimore's criminals as well as with his police colleagues. But this past weekend, Pierce was jailed after he got into a rumble with a Bernie Sanders supporter.

According to gossip site TMZ.com , Pierce, who is a supporter of Hillary Clinton, pushed a man and then went after his girlfriend at an Atlanta hotel after a political discussion got heated. The site said Pierce grabbed the woman by her hair and smacked her in the head.

Pierce was arrested and booked for simple battery and was released after posting a $1,000 bond, jail records show.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed the arrest in a statement but have not released details about Pierce's arrest:

"Mr. Wendell Pierce was arrested early Saturday morning at Atlanta Lowes Hotel, where he was a guest. The incident did not rise to anything significant so no special notification was made ... it was treated like any other arrest a patrol officer conducts. Mr. Pierce made no indication he was famous nor did the officer inquire. Once the incident report is complete, we will be delighted to share the details. But at this time, there is nothing significant to share with the media."

Federal Election Commission records show Pierce is a regular donor to Democrats, having given $2,700 to Clinton.
