The Senate Conservatives Fund has endorsed Midland University President Ben Sasse in the GOP primary for Nebraska's open Senate seat.
On Tuesday, the conservative group backed Sasse, choosing him over another top candidate, Shane Osborn, a former state treasurer and war hero, in this unpredictable race to replace retiring Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb.
"Ben Sasse is a strong conservative with a proven record of solving difficult problems," said SCF Executive Director Matt Hoskins. "He's an expert on health care policy and will help repeal Obamacare and enact free-market health care policies that lower costs and increase quality. There are other good candidates in this race, but Ben Sasse stands above the rest."
Sasse raised more than Osborn in the third quarter, pulling in a whopping $835,000. Osborn raised $337,000.
Last cycle in Nebraska, the SCF initially endorsed state Treasurer Don Stenberg in a GOP primary to succeed Democrat Ben Nelson. Stenberg lost the primary to now-Sen. Deb Fischer, whom the SCF later backed in the general.
Republicans control every seat in the Nebraska congressional delegation.
Nebraska's Senate race is rated a Safe Republican contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
