Sen. John McCain has been discharged from the hospital and spent time at his ranch in Arizona on Monday night, according to a tweet from his wife, Cindy.

Last Sunday, McCain, 81, was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis, his office announced in a press release last week. He emerged from the operation in stable condition.

“@SenJohnMcCain and I are home in our beloved Hidden Valley enjoying a glorious Arizona sunset,” Cindy McCain tweeted Monday along with an attached picture of the landscape around the ranch.

The longtime Republican senator from Arizona was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain cancer, last July after doctors discovered a tumor during surgery to remove a blood clot above his left eye.

McCain returned to Congress later that month in time to strike down the narrow Senate GOP majority’s first attempt at enacting a sweeping health care overhaul proposal — an effort McCain thwarted again in September when he opposed an updated partisan bill from GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy.

McCain’s office could not immediately be reached to provide a timetable on the senator’s return to Washington.
