Want to get the details on volunteer opportunities for President Barack Obama’s campaign? There’s an app for that, too.

In the high-tech world of campaigning, both presidential campaigns are looking to keep pace with a new age of communications and to make participating in the political process easier for their supporters.

The Obama campaign’s smartphone app lists local phone banks and volunteer events, and it allows volunteers to canvass their neighborhoods using only the app. It also includes information on voter registration, voter ID laws and localized information on how Obama’s policies are affecting individual communities.

“As we push through the last 100 days of this election, our focus remains on helping make grassroots organizing as easy and accessible as possible for the volunteers and supporters that are the heart and soul of this campaign,” deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said in a statement.

Downloading the Romney campaign app allows users to sign up to be among the first to hear who Romney will select as his running mate and share the news on social networks. The campaign is making the app available to iPhone and Android users. There doesn’t appear to be an app for BlackBerry devices.

“Users of the app will be the first to get the news on the biggest political decision of the year through an instantaneous alert on the one device most people carry around the clock — their phone,” Romney digital director Zac Moffatt said in a statement.
