House Democrats Boost Incumbents With TV Money

House Democrats continue to bolster their incumbents, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee expanding its defensive spending.  

Most notably, the DCCC is spending more in support of Democratic Reps. Collin C. Peterson in Minnesota and Dave Loebsack in Iowa, races that are only in recent days coming to the forefront of the House map .  

Here are the changes, made as both parties re-evaluate their chances with two weeks to go until Election Day:  

  • Arizona's 2nd District (Democratic Rep. Ron Barber): $270,000 from Wednesday through Oct. 27 in Tucson's broadcast market. A Republican operative who spotted this buy on Monday noted the television market here has become both flooded and expensive, so dollars do not go far anymore in what was once an inexpensive market.
  • Illinois' 12th District (Democratic Rep. Bill Enyart): $104,000 from Wednesday through Election Day in the Paducah broadcast market.
  • Iowa's 1st and/or 2nd districts (Open-seat race and Loebsack): $420,000 from Friday through Election Day in the Cedar Rapids broadcast market. This buy is reflective of the increasingly perilous position Democrats find themselves in in the Hawkeye State, and it is the first time the DCCC has spent money on Loebsack's race.
  • Minnesota's 7th District (Peterson): $294,000 in the Fargo broadcast market from Tuesday through Election Day.
  • Minnesota's 8th District (Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan): $740,000 in the Minneapolis broadcast market from Oct. 28 through Election Day.

A DCCC aide declined to indicate where the money for these buys came from, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and DCCC Chairman Steve Israel rallied Democratic Caucus members via conference call to pony up dues to the tune of $1 million in a week.  

"I told them that the person who sits next to you on the floor may be the election you save," Israel said in a recent interview with CQ Roll Call.
