A Republican super PAC will begin running TV and digital ads on Monday against Montana’s freshly minted Democratic nominee for the at-large House seat — before the GOP even has a nominee of its own.

Congressional Leadership Fund, which is endorsed by House GOP leadership, is spending $700,000 on cable and broadcast ads to attack Rob Quist, whom Democrats nominated at a party convention on Sunday for the special election that will take place on May 25.

Former GOP Rep. Ryan Zinke resigned his seat on Wednesday after being confirmed as Secretary of the Interior.  The GOP nominating convention will be Monday night.

Quist, a musician in the Mission Mountain Wood Band, won the nomination after four rounds of balloting. Endorsed by former Gov. Brian Schweitzer, he prevailed over state Rep. Amanda Curtis 90 to 69 on the final ballot.

In advance of Sunday’s Democratic convention, Congressional Leadership Fund produced ads against the top two Democratic candidates, allowing them to get the Quist ad on the air hours after he secured the nod.

The spot, titled “Out of Tune,” hits Quist for being “too liberal and out-of-touch with Montana.“

“Higher taxes, more spending, and doubling-down on government-run health care, Rob Quist is singing the same old liberal playbook,” CLF Executive Director Corry Bliss said in a statement. “Democrats have lined up behind a candidate they know nothing about and we look forward to exposing Quist’s baggage over the next several weeks,” he added.

Democrats targeted this seat in 2016, but Zinke won re-election by 16 points, while Trump here by more than 20 points. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the seat Solid Republican.

CLF went on the air in another special election last week. The super PAC debuted $1.1 million in digital and TV ads Thursday targeting Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s 6th District.
